The Creator

kushalbasu

Kushal Bose is a multi-faceted, creative talent. Engineer, business owner, filmmaker, storyteller, and musician, he has practiced his craft and applied his talents through many projects for more than thirty years. Kushal is passionate about digital media and the Internet and the possibilities they hold for connecting the world and helping achieve multi-cultural and creative tolerance and freedom.

A Humble Offering synthesizes his interests and experience with his passion for the message of Tagore. Kushal believes that Tagore's philosophy isn't something that you study, rather its something that you live.

Kushal chose to produce his latest project as a multi-media performance because it breaks the constraints presented by traditional performance and offers greater creative freedom. He feels that Tagore's message becomes more real and is easier to embrace when put in the vernacular of the 21st century and delivered in a way that engages and stimulates the senses.

The Man: Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 in Calcutta, India into a wealthy Brahmin family. He attempted to study law in England as a teenager, but pursued a career promoting multi-culturalism, diversity and tolerance instead. He was well known in India, and later in his life he became known throughout the world.

Tagore was a Renaissance man, a writer, playwright, songwriter, poet, philosopher and educator, a man of unusual physical and mental proportions. His spiritual presence was palpable. His words evoked great beauty, drawing in the heart and feeding the soul. He gave the world a glimpse of the mysticism and sentimental beauty of Indian culture that left the West hungry for more. He broke the rules and social norms of his time. He was the first non-westerner to receive the Nobel Prize for literature and King George V knighted him.

He was also a man of conscience. In 1919, following the Amritsar massacre of 400 Indian demonstrators by British troops, Tagore renounced his Knighthood. He was opposed to nationalism and militarism as a matter of principle. and instead promoted spiritual values and the creation of a new world culture.

Tagore was a literary, spiritual and social-political force to be reckoned with. Although Tagore is a superb representative of India and its culture - the man who wrote its national anthem - his life and works reach far beyond his country. He was educated and knowledgeable of Western culture, poetry and science. He was one of the first of our world to combine Eastern and Western philosophy, and ancient and modern knowledge.

Tagore left us more than his ideas, word and images…he opened the door to a new world vision. His life and his work challenge us to break the norms that restrict us.

The Concept: A Humble Offering

We live in a time of instant connection and communication, of incredible global pressure, of lifestyle images fabricated by marketers that are fed to us 24/7. Our youth have role models made by media moguls that push material wealth and excess when most of the world population goes hungry. We have become numb and impersonal from the barrage of media we are exposed to. These things are disconcerting and I worried about our youth and the world they will inherit.

I have heard the voice of Tagore calling to me… through his words and ideas my eyes have been opened…I have embraced his vision…and I have been moved to share this vision with you.

My vision is to free Tagore from the 20th century and to bring him to the 21st century. To open the eyes and ears of today's generations to the beauty and power of his message. To ignite a hunger for multi-cultural freedom and expression. To challenge our youth to find themselves and value their individuality. This is the time to broadcast Tagore's philosophy and message of hope using the media of the digital age.

A Humble Offering is a contemporary multi-media, immersive experience. Through images, words and dance, the philosophy and vision of Tagore comes to life. The work will be narrated in english. I invite you to experience and celebrate the man and his message.

The Contributing Talent

Sharmila Tagore is undeniably one of the most talented and versatile actors India has ever produced. She is perhaps the only actor who has successfully transitioned from Art films to commercial cinema. Having worked with some of the most successful directors like Satyajit Ray, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar, Mira Nayar, Sakti Samanta, Sharmila has stolen millions of hearts with her talent, versatility not to mention her looks, glorious dimples and sassy smile. Ms.Tagore has taken time out of her demanding schedule to record the introduction to each Act in “A Humble Offering”. We are grateful for her belief in and support of this project, and for lending her voice to this unique multi-media experience. She will not be present at either performance.
