Sharmila TagoreSharmila Tagore is undeniably one of the most talented and versatile actors India has ever produced. She is perhaps the only actor who has successfully transitioned from Art films to commercial cinema. Having worked with some of the most successful directors like Satyajit Ray, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar, Mira Nayar, Sakti Samanta, Sharmila has stolen millions of hearts with her talent, versatility not to mention her looks, glorious dimples and sassy smile. Her repertoire includes a wide range of histrionics from being a symbol of artistic expression to a sophisticated stylish icon to a National award winner. She debuted in Satyajit Ray’s Apur Sansar followed by Devi, in which she was cast as an incarnation of Goddess Kali. According to her those films were just an offhand chance and she acted in them out of sheer curiosity. Sharmila began her career in Bollywood with a romantic musical, Kashmir Ki Kali, 1964, opposite Shammi Kapoor, directed by the famous director Shakti Samantha. In 1966 she took up the titular role of Anupama in the Hrishikesh Mukherjee's film. Though she sported a stylised bouffant, she wowed everyone as the simple, shy and soft-spoken girl. Sharmila has always been a trendsetter. From her marriage to a Muslim Nawab, the wildly popular cricket captain of India, Mansoor Ali Khan, to the obscenity-spewing whore in the film Mausam, again a dual role, opposite Sanjeev Kumar directed by Gulzar. This movie garnered her the coveted National Award. Her other movies with Sanjeev Kumar include Charitraheen, GrihaPravesh and Namkeen. With a surname like Tagore, Sharmila had the awesome responsibility of living up to people’s expectation with respect to her talent, demeanor, character and personality. She has exceeded the expectation in all those categories, and with dignity and extreme humility. We are extremely fortunate to have Sharmila Tagore narrate the introduction to each Act in in our play “A Humble Offering”. Due to Ms. Tagore's demanding schedule, she will not be able to join us in person.
